Coaching - a method, but not a panacea
You hear it in many places, even from the tap nowadays, that it is coaching. I am trying to dispel the fog with this article, from this sometimes overly mystified field.
Coaching is a methodology, where the focus on the individual, individual problemsra. Let's say conversations, for want of a better word - kind of inspiring, developmental consultation (back and forth, because optimally both parties, the coach himself, "learn").
In short, the aim of coaching is to transform a given life situation, a negative life situation, into a positive one.
We project a positive image and really focus on what the individual person's strengths, skills, competences are.
What does a good coaching process look like?
In fact, you can good for a coaching processwhen you are so we can ask questions to get the client thinking.
From the current, negative state to a more energetic one, we can move from coaching toolsto tip it into a more positive state.
We make him a less stressed person with a more positive attitude. But don't imagine a pink cloud, stay grounded in reality, or let's be more optimistic.
We want to achieve a stress-free state with the client, so that they are not under pressure in a given situation.
For example, in some situations you can accept the facts. In a situation over which you have no control. In such a case, you are lucky if you "let it go" and don't grind it out, don't try to change it. Just deal with your own issues and move forward with them. He can accept the situation, he doesn't get upset about it.
A quote came to mind:
"There are two things in the world that are not worth stressing about: one you can change and one you can't change."
The point is that when a client gets into a problematic situation, they can handle it in a harmonious and calm way.
I wrote process in the title above because I believe and have experienced that typically coaching is not a one-off session. The first session is mostly "getting to know you" and once there is mutual sympathy, then you can move on. The frequency with which someone attends a coaching consultation varies, but it is best to leave time between sessions to allow what has been said in previous sessions to settle.
How does a coaching session work?
Coaching is based on asking the right question. The measure of successful coaching is when the coach can ask good questions.
In addition to questions, other tools can be used, some people work with pictures. The point of a coaching card is to find out what feelings a particular image evokes in the client. I do not use these cards.
Different types of questions are distinguished. The coach needs to feel, know and experience what to ask in a given situation and in what style.
Types of questions:
- Systematic
- repurposing
- shady
- deepening
- feedback
- provocative
- goal-setting question
- resource
- hypothetical
In addition to the questions, the coach also uses:
- assertive communication, and
- storytelling: telling a lead story that is independent of the individual. In this story, the coach provides a solution that can lead the client to the solution.
Coaching is based on the here and now: what if things could happen the way you want them to?
In what areas can coaching be used?
You could say almost everywhere. One thing they have in common, however, is that the focus is always on the right question, asked in the right place and chosen correctly.
Coaching areas:
- business
- Leadership
- life coaching
- team
- careers
Coaching supports the following process:
- self-awareness - strengthening strengths
- self-improvement
- target design
- target realisation
There can be many pitfalls in the above process, one of which is typically related to the goal: are you sure that the goal is the right one and that it is your goal? This pitfall can be avoided with the right self-awareness.
What is a "Titanilla coaching" like?
I put it in quotation marks because in addition to coaching tools, I use positive psychology, psychoanalysis and my professional experience (HR disciplines) in a consultation.
I very often ask questions intuitively. I go back to the past, as opposed to coaching, which only deals with the present and focuses on the now. Coaching does not deal with the future either, although it does formulate a vision. I also deal with the past. From there I guide the client into the present and on into the future.
For me, coaching is not just a conversation. In addition to the questions, I make an exercise that fits the client's personality and problems. On the contrary, I don't use pictures or games.
And a few days after the consultations, I usually call the client to ask how they are feeling and how they are coping with their newfound strengths.
